When do I actually need new tires?

You need new tires when the tread is level with the wear bars, when the sidewall shows a bulge or deep cracking, or when a puncture sits somewhere that cannot be repaired. Age counts as well, even with tread left. Columbus Tire Shop in Columbus can inspect all of it in person.

How do I check the tread myself?

Look for the wear bars, small raised strips set into the grooves. When the surface of the tread is flush with them, the tire is finished. The penny test gives the same verdict: put a coin in a groove with the head upside down, and if you can see all of the head, the tread is too low.

Check across the whole width, not only the middle. Wear on one edge usually points to an alignment problem that a new set will not fix by itself.

What damage means replacement no matter the tread?

A bulge or bubble in the sidewall means the internal structure has failed and the tire can let go without warning. Cracks in the rubber between the tread blocks or on the sidewall are the other warning sign.

  • Bulges or bubbles
  • Cracking in the grooves or on the sidewall
  • A puncture in the shoulder or sidewall
  • A tire that was driven on while flat

Does age matter if the tread still looks good?

Yes. Rubber hardens with time whether or not the car moves. The date code molded into the sidewall tells you when the tire was made, and your tire maker or owner's manual says how long is too long. A spare that has never touched the road is subject to the same rule.

What if the car just feels wrong?

A vibration that grows with speed, or a pull to one side, can be balance, alignment, or a damaged tire. Describe it when you call and ask whether road force balancing would help find the cause.

Can I just replace the worst tire?

Sometimes. It depends on how worn the other three are and on whether the car is all-wheel drive. Have all four measured before you decide.

Where can I get my tires looked at?
