Can my tire be repaired, or do I need a new one?

A puncture in the flat center of the tread can usually be repaired by taking the tire off the rim and sealing it from the inside. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder cannot be repaired safely. Columbus Tire Shop in Columbus can look at the tire and tell you which side of that line yours falls on.

Where on the tire is the hole?

Location decides almost everything. The tread face, the flat part that meets the road, is the only zone where a repair holds. The shoulder, where the tread curves into the sidewall, and the sidewall itself flex too much for a patch to stay sealed.

If you can, leave the nail or screw in place and bring the tire as it is. Where the object sits is the first thing anyone inspecting the tire needs to see.

Is a plug from the outside a proper fix?

A string plug pushed in from outside stops the air loss but leaves the inside of the tire unexamined. A proper repair starts with the tire coming off the rim, so the inner liner can be checked for damage and the hole filled and sealed from within.

When you get a quote, ask which of the two you are being offered. Plug-only and patch-and-plug are different jobs, and they should not cost the same.

When does a tire with good tread still need replacing?

Plenty of punctured tires fail the repair test for reasons that have nothing to do with the hole itself.

  • It was driven on while flat, which can wreck the inner sidewall even if the outside looks fine.
  • There is a bulge or bubble anywhere on the sidewall.
  • An earlier repair sits close to the new puncture.
  • The tread is already down to the wear bars, in which case repairing it only delays the replacement.

Can I drive on a slow leak to get it fixed?

If it is only losing air slowly, topping it up and driving gently to a shop is reasonable. If it has gone fully flat, put the spare on instead, because even a short drive on a flat can ruin the inside of the tire and turn a repairable puncture into a replacement.

Should a repaired tire be rebalanced?

Ask. Once the tire is off the rim for the repair, rebalancing is easy to add, and it is worth requesting if you feel vibration afterward.
